Email me with comments or questions at tduncan(at)haverford.eduFxLombardFTimberhillLLSilendraL8ArlianneLPThis way - Left That way - Right The courtroom is stuffy, and after spending hours withering under the accusing stare of the magistrate, you find yourself more than a little irritated."The solution to this problem is obvious to me," the magistrate croaks in his dry, froggish voice. "As we have always done with civil suits of this nature, you two must play the Game. I trust you both know the rules of Cavel's Game?" The magistrate eyes you and the woman standing next to you lazily over the rim of his spectacles. You shrug and turn to look at Silendra. The stupid woman is dressed from ankle to neck in her finest yellow dress, tight enough to keep the men leering and loose enough to flow smoothly behind her like a royal gown. Silendra gives a slight arrogant shrug indicating careless ignorance, as if the matters of court are below one such as herself. You snort derisively and turn your attention back to the magistrate for explanation. You give a slight shrug, indicating that you aren't fluent in the language of Law. Arlianne, wearing a filthy purple rag that barely passed for a dress, quivers frantically, obviously unsure of what to do. You have no worry that the magistrate would order something potentially dangerous to a person as important as yourself. You smile smugly at your opponent's display of immaturity and turn your attention back to the judge. The magistrate sighs, unhappy at having to explain. "Will someone fetch that silly wizard?" he asks impatiently.Moments pass, spent in heated agitation. The courtroom is extremely stuffy in the late summer afternoon, and the discomfort of sweat soaking your fine clothing only fuels your anger. Suddenly, the doors in the back of the room bang open and an aged man wearing a shiny blue robe with a matching shiny blue pointed hat comesstumbling hurriedly down the aisle. mThe man assumes his position in the front of the room. He wears a long, unkempt gray beard that went nearly to his waste, and, though over six feet tall, his hunched over stance makes him appear old and frail. You wait in silence as the man catches his breath, hoping that your cooperation will speed the process."Cavel," the magistrate rasps, "Thank you for joining us on such short notice." The wizard acknowledges the judge with a wave of his hand because his panting precluded speach. The magistrate continues, "These two women," he indicates you and your opponent, "have brought a case before us. They must play your Game to come to a decision. Would you please explain the rules to them?"The Wizard nods, taking a last moment to catch his breath. "In the days of old, we used to try criminals by tossing them into a river and seeing if they could float! How Law has changed. Why I remember..." "Cavel," the magistrate interrupts with weary agitation, "I'm sure we all appreciate your stories, but we are in dire need of a recess. Could you please skip all of the introductory mumbo-jumbo and proceed to the point?" The wizard opens his mouth to protest, his features scrunching in annoyance, but thinks better of it and skips ahead."Ladies," he begins again. "The rules are simple. I create a world using..." he pauses for effect..."MAGIC"... another pause..."and send the two of you there. The world is not large, but you will be transported to different parts of it. Each of you will have in your immediate area a clearly marked shrine. Your mission is to make it to your opponent's shrine and take the magical Crown that only you will be able to find there.qWhoever obtains the Crown first is deemed the winner of the Game, and therefore, the innocent party." The wizard nearly beams with pride as he finishes his description, and he adds in self-praise, "Isn't justice just wonderful? To think that I can use magic to decide right from wrong... why I remember a time when..>"c"Thank you, Cavel," the magistrate interrupts again, obviously trying his best to speed the proceedings along. "If the Ladies have no questions..." he eyes the two of you, his rheumy eyes almost daring you to ask anything, "... then we'll proceed with the Game. You may begin when you are ready, Cavel."The Wizard's features screw up in agitation at the the magistrate's second interruption, but he does not protest. In fact, you find it hard to picture the bumbling old man getting angry at anything. Suddenly, an invisible force assails you, buffeting you from all sides at once. The sound of Cavel's chanting rings in your ears as consciousness begin to slip from your grasp, the pain almost too great to bear. You begin to scream. And then the pain, the courtroom, Cavel, and your opponent vanish. The magic was gone, and you are alone in a beautiful sylvan wonderland. Cavel's Game haa apparently begun.Scouts report the existence of another, larger town to the north. Silendra only needs to touch it and she has won, regardless of the strength of your armies. You must seek the Purple Shrine. Therein lies your victory..." The shade disappears suddenly into the shadows.aA man wearing a tan uniform knocks on your office door. You open the door and the man greets you, "Hello, madam, you have a parcel that just arrived this morning. Could you sign here, please?" You sign a slip of parchment on a large stone slab (he calls it a "clip-board") and thank him for his time. You close the door behind you. Could this be the new carrot peeler you ordered? You tear through the packaging quickly and read the card underneath. It reads, "From Silendra". Your excitement suddenly is extinguished. You open the box and find only a single piece of paper inside. It reads, "Listen, you little wench. I don't know who this stupid Cavel guy is and I don't know anything about this game. I know one thing, though. You're a dead woman. Nobody stomps on MY petunias and gets away with it. If that silly knight, Sir Folodalaw, hadn't been nearby, I would have slit your greasy little throat. God only knows what you were doing snooping around my castle anyways. Just watch yourself, little woman. You better pray you win this game, because if not, I'm going to sell you into eternal slavery!" The letter ends abruptly, unsigned. You open the box quickly, hoping it is a new dress or a present from a secret admirer. Alas, it is just a measley carrot peeler. "I didn't order this!" you yell, tossing the device in the garbage. On second thought, you realize that you don't really have a good carrot peeler, and so you dig it out of the garbage and take it to the kitchen. You decide to write a note back to Silendra, hoping that an explanation might help calm her anger. A sudden idea pops into your head. How about a gift? You decide to send her a carrot peeler. Even though yours has yet to arrive, the UPS (United Peeler Service) is renowned for the quality of their peelers, and it might just settle the difference between the two of you.h The UPS man (United Peeler Service) shows up at your door again with another package. You sign for the thing and open the box. To your dismay you find yet another carrot peeler. You are about to pitch the thing (one can only use a single carrot peeler!) when you notice a tag at the bottom of the package. It reads, "Silendra. I thought maybe you could accept this gift as a sign of peace. I didn't mean to step in your petunias. I didn't even know they were yours. You didn't have to get so angry at me. If that lovely Sir Folodalaw hadn't intervened, I think you may have done something rash! Please, accept my apologies and this gift. Can we not just be friends?" It is signed 'Arianne'. So she thinks she can buy you off when she ruined your prize. Petunias??? Well, she's got another thing coming. Besides, you already have a perfectly good carrot peeler, and you aren't about to settle a dispute with a cheap gift like that. You sit down to your stationary and prepare to tell your rival as much. A note arrives in the mail. "Arriane," it begins, "I recieved your cheap carrot peeler in the mail today. Do you think you can buy me off with such trifles? Nothing short of diamonds or rubies would do that. Besides, I already have a perfectly good carrot peeler. I received one in the mail not a week ago, even though I didn't order it, the exact same one. You can't expect me to drop the charges based on a gift I already have, can you? Besides, you killed my prize petunias, and you will DIE for that. Now, stop chattering and defend yourself. I'm coming for that shrine of yours!" The message is signed, 'S'. You throw down the note in disgust. Could YOUR carrot peeler accidentally been delivered to Silendra by mistake? Any DECENT human would have tried to relocate the real owner before keeping it. This means WAR! You write Silendra, telling her as much.Another note, this time on old, crumpled paper, as if the author didn't feel you were worth fine stationary. "Silendra," it begins, "That original carrot peeler was MINE. I ordered it for myself but it never arrived here. I demand you return it to me at once. And my gift as well. You obviously don't deserve a UPS peeler! - A" She demands? You nearly quake in anger. Such a lowlife doesn't demand anything from you.qYou run to the kitchen and find the original carrot peeler. With a tenderizing hammer (also from UPS - they're not just a peeler company anymore), you smash the peeler into pieces and put them in a box, sending it, along with a note, to Arianne. That'll teach her to step on your petunias and to demand things of you!A package arrives today from the UPS. Could this be your peeler and you wrongly accused Silendra of stealing yours? You open the parcel carefully and to your horror it IS your peeler, smashed into several pieces. A note reads, "Arianne, I'm so sorry about keeping your original peeler. I tried to send it back in one piece, but for some reason my hand slipped and I smashed the crap out of it with my meat tenderizer. I hope you aren't too upset.Oh, I can't return the second peeler because you can't take back something you've already given! Have a nice day, fruitcake. - S" So you're a fruitcake, now? How DARE she smash your carrot peeler. How are you supposed to peel your carrots now? Suddenly an idea strikes you. You place a quick call to the UPS. You are going to report her for peeler theft!A harsh knocking disrupts your gardening. Since coming to Cavel's Game, you've taken to planting NEW petunias in your front yard during your spare time. You answer the door and are surprised to see several large men carrying swords and wearing UPS uniforms. The largest comes forth and growls, "Where is it??" You are confused, and shrug stupidly. "OK, boys, let's go." Suddenly, they barge into your house, breaking the door off itshinges in the process. "What are you looking for?" you stammer. The big one turns to you. "We've had a report of a stolen peeler," he replies. You are about to deny it when a call from the kitchen interrupts you. "I found it!" someone says. The big man runs to the kitchen and looks the utensil over. Sure enough, he found the trademark UPS seal. You curse inwardly. "Sorry ma'am," he says, coming back to the living room, "But we have to returnthis peeler to the rightful owner. We'll be sending you a summons to peeler court within the week." The rest of the soldiers file out of the door. You can't help but notice several of them stepping on your new petunias. Damn that woman, you think. Arianne must be responsible for this. And now you are the one without a peeler!A hard knocking on your front door startles you. You grab the nearest weapon you can find (an official UPS apple corer - they don't make just peelers, you know!) and open the door cautiously, half-expecting Silendra to be there. To your surprise, it is a very large UPS man. On his outstretched hand is a purple velvet cushion that supports a shiny new carrot peeler. "My lady, your peeler!" the man says, bowing. You gingerly take the device and swingit back and forth a few times, testing it's impeccable balance. "It was forged in the fires of Onione by John W. Fork himself," the burly man continues, "Of the finest Orango Steel." The men back away from you, heads lowered in quiet reverence. You can't help but smiling smugly. With this, nobody will stand in your way, especially that now peelerless Selendra! You thank the men and begin to prepare the stew of a lifetime.!You've been four days without your peeler, and more than a month without your petunias. Something must be done about this Arianne. You go to the market, intending to find an assassin to end the problem once and for all.!Though it's only been two days since you got your peeler back, it seems like you've had a lifetime of incredibly tasty meals. You never knew how wonderful peeled carrot could taste! But something seems to itch at the back of your mind. What if Selendra found a way to steal your precious peeler? She must be removed from the equation... permanently. You begin to investigate the possibility of.... ASSASSINATION.%You awaken in a foreign, cold, dark room, lit only by a single torch. The chamber is perfectly square with no doors, windows, grates, bars, or any opening of any kind. The floor and walls are constructed of slimy stone. The nauseating smell of mold and stale air burns your nostrils and eyes. Then you realize that you are not alone.%%Across the room sits Selendra, dressed in the same perfect yellow gown. She eyes you with contempt. You return the glare, trying to decide whether to rush over and strangle her. If only you had your peeler, you could make quick work of her.z%Across the room sits Arianne, dressed in the same filthy purple rags. Hasn't she any more dignity than that? You glare at her, knowing that if your eyes were daggers, she'd be stabbed through the face. She returns your stare confidently. You can barely restrain yourself from running over and beating the blood from her body.c%Suddenly a flash of light blinds you, and the Wizard, Cavel, is standing in the center of the room. He is no longer stooped over like a miser, and his features are congested into an angry scowl. His body seems to crackle with magical energy. Something about his demeanor demands silence, and you comply.%"What is wrong with you two?" he roars without pretense. "An innocent Game to decide this case, which is really rather stupid, you know, and you two resort to assassination!?? Over what... this?" the Wizard holds out the shiny peeler.%Seeing the device sends a wave of relief through you. Oh, how nice it is to peel carrots.... Your mind begins to wander, but Cavel's deep angry tone brings you quickly back. "Now, Arlianne tries to spy on her secret love, Sir Folodalaw, and in the process steps on Silendra's petunias. Silendra sues and that's why you two are here. If the Knight hadn't interceded, one of you two insolent women might have been at a murder trial.%And now, while in the Game, you find cause to once again be at each other's throats! Well, no more! I thought putting a branch of the UPS in my world would make cooking easier, but I was foolish. They are hereby removed from the game, and this," he holds up the peeler, "As well." With a flick of his wrist, he snaps the peeler into two pieces.I%Despair washes over you. "Not my peeler!" you cry. You scramble over and pick up the two pieces of the device and try in vain to put them back together, as if your fingers can weld steal. With a heavy sob, you drop the useless metal and turn your attention back to the wizard.%You are shocked by the action, but can't help but watch in smug happiness as Arlianne cries out. How pathetic, you think to yourself. Despite the satisfaction of seeing Arlianne reduced to infantile weaping, you can't help but feel a pang of regret. Afterall, it was a nice peeler. You sigh and turn your attention back to the wizard.%"As far as I'm concerned," Cavel continues, "You can both eat unpeeled carrots, though the thought of eating carrot skin nearly sends me into seizures. Now that the problem is settled, I assume you'll return to the Game at hand?" he glares at you both. When you and your opponent meekly nod, he mumbles, "Good," and disappears with a crack of lightning. You suddenly find yourself back in the Game.s*It's been 5 days since Cavel's reprimand, and you are feeling a little sad. You healer says it's just PPD (post-peeler depression), but you can't shake the feelings of great loss. You do reluctantly call off the assassination of your opponent, but only for now. When you get out of this place, anything is fair game...a.Ah, happiness returns! Through sheer brilliance, a friend at the market named Mak-Guyfer shows you how to make a homemade carrot peeler out of a half glass of water, the handle of a hoe, and a thimble full of ground up earthworm.
